Cigliano di Sopra

Maddalena Fucile e Matteo Vacari
Toscana

It’s on the northern edge of Chianti Classico, in the San Casciano in Val di Pesa area, that you’ll find the fattoria Cigliano di Sopra, a noble 32-hectare estate around the Cigliano hill, with 7 hectares of vineyards, 17 hectares of olive groves and the rest made up of woods and meadows and a citrus garden with many old varieties that completes and nourishes the biodiversity of the place.
Maddalena Fucile and Matteo Vacari are determined and demanding young winemakers who graduated from the University of Agronomy in Florence in 2017 and, before taking over Maddalena’s family estate, gained experience on farms in Tuscany, California and Oregon. As is often the case in Tuscany and central Italy, the cellars, like the buildings, are architecturally impressive in their ability to convey a harmonious and warm feeling. The vineyard, cultivated according to the principles of organic and biodynamic farming, is subdivided into 11 plots that have a marked identity with a common point: sandy soil with a high percentage of limestone. The grape varieties planted are Sangiovese, Canaiolo, Colorino and Merlot. The wines are aged in used barrels and vats for 14 months after macerations of between 10 and 30 days. Two wines are produced: the Ciglianello which is a blend of Colorino, Canaiolo, Sangiovese and Merlot and a Chianti Classico, pure Sangiovese, from the best selected grapes. The wines express a beautiful energy, with a tannic structure that is present but delicate, in a Tuscan style that makes you want to pass them around the table.
