António Madeira

Dão

António Madeira is a young producer who lived until the summer of 2017 between Paris, where he grew up and worked as a Logistics Engineer, and Dão at the foot of Serra da Estrela, next to Pinhanços, where his family comes from and where he he builds his wine future with passion and determination, seeking to reveal the potential of the Serra and the old vineyards aged between 50 and 120 years of age of small local wine growers, located between 450m and 600m in altitude, in essentially granitic soils. There are many small plots where there is a great mixture of grape varieties, where the reds Jaen, Baga and Tinta Amarela stand out and the whites Bical, Fernão Pires, Siria, Cerceal and Arinto. This characteristic composition of old vines in this area is very different from the choice made in modern Dão vineyards, so the profile of António’s wines leads us back to what Dão wines were a few decades ago. It works in a natural way the vineyards, with the application of practices that strengthen the balance of the ecosystem and the vinifications are of low intervention, with spontaneous fermentations, little technology and without the addition of oenological products, made in a precise and careful way. The result is less aromatic wines, with woodsy expressions, and a fine tannin structure that needs some bottle aging to reveal its expressiveness and naturalness, a Dão that comes back to life.
