Tarlant

Benoît et Mélanie Tarlant
Champagne

Founded in 1687, this estate produces champagnes that defy time and open up new perspectives. Now in its 12th generation, it is run by siblings Mélanie and Benoît, who continue the ancestral work of this family based in Oeuilly, in the Marne Valley, just 10 minutes west of the Champagne capital, Épernay.

The first mention of ‘still’ wines — non-sparkling — dates back to the 1870s, thanks to the impetus of Louis Tarlant, a pioneer in Champagne production and a highly talented winegrower. Today, they cultivate 15 hectares of vineyards using certified organic farming methods, spread over 35 plots in four villages where their grandparents had vineyards: Oeuilly, Boursault, Celles-les-Condé and Saint-Agnan. Depending on the altitude of the slopes, the subsoils alternate between clay, chalk and sand.

The vineyard includes all the traditional grape varieties of the region, with a predominance of Pinot Noir (40%), Chardonnay (25%) and Pinot Meunier (16%), along with Pinot Blanc, Arbanne, Petit Meslier, Fromenteau, and 5% ungrafted vines.

One of the distinctive characteristics of Tarlant Champagnes is their long ageing in the bottle — between 5 and 20 years — before being sold. This time is essential for them to completely dispense with sugar dosage: it is time itself that softens the wines and gives them a depth and complexity that justify our enthusiasm, starting with the entry-level wine, the Zero Brut Nature.
