NEW PRODUCER

Clos du Jaugueyron

Bordeaux (Margaux, Haut-Médoc)

Michel Théron, originally from the Minervois, north of Carcassonne, went to the Médoc in 1988 to study, and his meetings with Stéphanie Destruhaut and the Médoc terroir turned a journey of discovery and wine training into setting up as a vigneron in Arsac, in the south of the Margaux DO, at the end of the 1990s. They began by finding a small plot with 0.5ha of vines in Arsac and today cultivate 7.75ha of vines, split almost equally between the DO Haut Médoc around the village of Macao and another half in Arsac in DO Margaux.

Haut Medoc wines come from the Macau terroir, made up of fine, sandy, well-draining gravel that warms up quickly, planted with Cabernet-Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot and Petit Verdot.

Margaux wines come from two sub-zones:
– the ‘Tertre’ sector with thicker stony gravel above a clay layer that gives the wine power and energy
– the ‘Poujeau de Perrin’ sector, which has a sandy surface layer with gravel and quartz.

The farming is certified biodynamic, but the most important thing for them is the sensitive interpretation of each of the 16 cultivated plots and an attentive eye for their nuances, approaching the wine in its wider cultural and natural environment. The kindness and humanity of this couple was the key we needed to finally introduce the Medoc region to the goliardic universe. The finesse and depth of the wines are confirmation of the Medoc’s unique ability to reveal the silky side of Cabernet-sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet-Franc and Petit verdot when they are planted in the right terroirs and cultivated with subtlety and precision.

THE WINES

Haut Medoc 2021: Vines planted in 1998. Cabernet-Sauvignon (55%), Merlot (20%), Cabernet-Franc (14%), Petit verdot (11%). Grapes destemmed without treading, fermentation in cement vats, ageing for 12 months in 400-litre barrels and 12-litre vats, without racking in a reducing medium. 2021 was a complicated year in terms of weather, but it had a long cycle and slow ripening, with a fortunately sunny end to the summer that allowed for fresh ripening. Harvest from 21 to 27 September.
Haut Medoc 2020: Same vines as the 2021 wine, planted in 1998. A dry and hot year, but unlike 2021, a rainy harvest that forced us to speed up the harvest a little.
Margaux Nout 2020: 100% Merlot. Vines planted in 1989 on a plot in Arsac with a mix of Cabernet-sauvignon (1.12ha) and Merlot (1.41ha). Same vinification and ageing as for Haut Medoc. The name Nout refers to the sky in biodynamic symbolism.
Margaux Clos Du Jaugueyron 2020: Same plot as Nout. 80% Cabernet-sauvignon, 20% Merlot. Harvested on 21 September, in the morning, because of the heat. Same vinification and ageing as the other wines.
