Quinta Val da Figueira

João Hoelzer
Douro

Quinta Val da Figueira is on the right bank of the Douro, next to Pinhão, and was a pioneer at the end of the century. XIX in the replanting of the so-called “exotic” vines (that is, grafted with an American foot) by the hand of the height owner, Joaquim Leite Pereira, famous wine grower who played an important role after the devastation caused by phylloxera. The farm has belonged to the current owners for three generations, led today by the warm João Calém Hoelzer, half-Douro, half-Scottish, who runs 16 hectares of vineyards, on slopes facing Rio, all in letters A, for a production almost exclusively dedicated to Port wines (Tawny 10 years, Vintage and Porto Branco 7 years extra-Dry) with a little table wine with the name Doc Douro. This farm’s Tawnies are sublime with an aromatic complexity that makes older tawnies think, in a dry style. Vintage are dense, with a chewy material and a beautiful freshness. Still little known, João Hoelzer, dusty and at the same time distinguished, but above all tireless, does not hesitate to fill glasses to let them know!
